Background:

Liadan grew up fairly isolated in a remote part of Ireland, near the lake of Sevenwaters from which the family's last name was derived. Her family had a long history with the Fae who lived in this part of the world, which resulted in many of them being meta human. Unfortunately, recent interactions with the Fae, particularly those experienced by Liadan's mother when she was young, led to the family distrusting the supernatural beings.

Liadan was very close with both her parents, her older sister, Niamh, and her twin brother, Sean. Years before Liadan was born, her mother had a vision of her future children that included Niamh and Sean, but not Liadan. She believed that this meant her youngest daughter was outside of the pattern that the Fae had laid out for the family, giving her more freedom to determine her own destiny.

Liadan's life was fairly peaceful, with her largest problem being that her boyfriend, Eamon, was definitely more into her than she was into him. This all changed when Niamh fell in love with a man named Ciaran. Unfortunately, it turned out that, due to Fae hijinks, Ciaran was in fact Niamh (and Liadan's) half-uncle. The relationship ended fast and Niamh soon became involved with, and quickly engaged to, another man.

On her way home from Niamh's wedding, Liadan was kidnapped by a group of hunters known as the Painted Men, due to most of them having intricate tattoos. One of the group, Evan, had been injured and Liadan was known to have knowledge of healing, as well as some healing powers. However, the leader of the group, known as the Chief, had not been told that his men were bringing a healer from the outside and was not happy.

Liadan tried her best to heal Evan, using her meta human gifts and her knowledge of herbal remedies, but ultimately she was unable to save his life. However, during this time her relationship with the leader, whom she called Bran, changed and they slept together. However, Bran then discovered who Liadan's family was and cut all contact with her, since he had been a bystander cut up in her mother's interactions with the Fae and been badly treated because of it.

Soon after Liadan returned home, she discovered that she was pregnant. While her parents were not happy about this development, they supported her in the decision to raise the child on her own. Liadan also finally ended things completely with Eamon, who did not take it well.

Around this time, Niamh came home for the first time since her marriage and it was obvious that she was being abused by her husband. Liadan secretly contacted Bran and arranged for him to help her sister escape the marriage by making it seem as those she had died in an accident. For Niamh's protection, Liadan kept the fact that she was alive and well a secret from her family.

A few months later, Liadan's son, Johnny, was born. Throughout the pregnancy she had refused to tell anyone who the father was; however, her mother realized that their pasts were connected, as the delivery was so similar to one she'd helped with many years before, at Bran's birth.

Liadan was approached several times, before and after Johnny was born, by one of the most prominent local Fae, whom her family called the Lady of the Forest. The Lady made it clear that she had specific plans for Johnny in the future, plans that Liadan did not trust.

Not long after Johnny's birth, Liadan's mother died after being sick for well over a year. This death hit the entire household hard. It also brought Eamon back one last time, begging for Liadan to marry him. When she refused him once again, he was enraged, especially as he had discovered that Bran, a man he hated, was Johnny's father.

Liadan hoped that Eamon would finally move on with his life. But instead, he decided to take his revenge, capturing and torturing Bran and another hunter from the group, who went by the name Gull. Eamon also planned to prevent his sister, Aisling, from seeing her boyfriend, Sean, again. Liadan however received a vision of what was going on and forced Eamon to let his sister and captives go. Bran had been badly wounded and traumatized by the experience, but Liadan was able to help him get through this.

Life calmed down for them finally, once Liadan and Bran were openly together. A year later, Bran and Liadan were married. Bran still remained the leader of the Painted Men, while Liaden stayed at home with the child, as well as her brother and Aisling, who had also married. Although she and Bran do not see each other often, they are very committed to each other and to Johnny.

Liadan always wished to raise her son in Sevenwaters. However, the Lady of the Forest became more aggressive in her attempts to get access to Johnny and Liadan eventually decided it was too risky. It was Bran's suggestion that Liadan move to London, as he had contacts amoung the Hillingdon Clan who he believed would be able and willing to help her. And so Liadan packed up her belongings and her now 5 year old son and moved, hoping to finally be able to make a life for her family on their own terms.

Personality:

Liadan is an extremely practical woman. Growing up, she had modest dreams and wished to live a simple life, ideally as close to her childhood home as possible. However, she is quick to put aside conventions when necessary and thus is very adaptable to different situations.

Liadan values family above all else - and that includes the family she has created for herself with Bran and the other Painted Men. Once someone has earned her love and loyalty, she will stand by them, even if others she cares about disapprove or just don't understand.

While Liadan is diminutive in statue, she has a very strong, commanding presence. This, combined with her ability to appear calm and collected under pressure (even when terrified inside) has made her a natural leader whom even the more experienced Painted Men will defer to.

Liadan is also known for being very stubborn, especially when she is told that something is "fated" to occur. She values her free will highly and refuses to let anyone make her decisions for you. And once she has made a decision, she sticks with it until the end, no matter how bitter that end may be.

Liadan became a healer first because she wished to gain her mother's approval but also because she has a great desire to do good and make the world a better place. While her practical nature also makes her a realist, she has been known to cling to hope in face of overwhelming odds - and she has been known to win despite those odds.

Liadan has a great capacity to see the good in people, though she is cautious around strangers, especially strange Fae. She also has a level of caution around other supernatural beings, especially vampires given Bran's profession, though she does her best not to pre-judge someone based solely on their species.

Liadan hates keeping secrets and is a poor liar; however she will conceal the truth in order to protect those she loves. She is also mentally tough enough to defend these secrets from those who would try to steal them from her.

Finally, she is an excellent storytelling, having heard many tales of her people from her mother. She also does have a wry sense of humour that matches her tendency to speak plainly.

Powers & Possessions:

Liadan has several powers, most of which are powers passed down through her family:

  • The Sight: she gets visions of the past, present, or possible futures. She views this power as both a gift and a curse. She can sometimes share parts of these visions telepathically with those she is close to.

  • Telepathy: as well as being able to share the experience of a vision, Liadan can also communicate telepathically with certain members of her family. Her strongest bond is with her twin brother, Sean.

  • Healing: Liadan's healing is mostly done through the use of herbal remedies but she also has some magical healing abilities for the physical body, allowing her to ease pain, prevent infection, and speed up the healing process.

  • Mental/emotional healing: When someone is in severe mental or emotional distress, Liadan can create a mental connection with them and see what they are experiencing in their mind. She can then use their own memories to remind them of more positive times and experiences. This power is very draining for Liadan, so she does not use it often.

  • Fae-based abilities: Liadan can recognize a Fae on sight. Also, she can negate some of the magical powers of a Fae, if their abilities are weaker than her own.

Liadan's notable possessions:

  • A simple gold wedding band

  • A worn, handmade blanket she made for Johnny using several squares of material with sentimental value

  • her healing pack, contained herbs, a suture kit, and a small silver knife

Prose Sample:

Liadan decided that she and Johnny would take the train all the way to London, rather than going to the airport. She knew Bran thought she was being a little ridiculous but he wisely didn't say anything.

Once Johnny was settled in his seat with a colouring book and some crayons, Liadan focused her attention outside. They were travelling through a forest now, the tracks cutting around the edge. This was her forest and Liadan knew she would be on edge until they were safely through.

She kept watching for at least half an hour. By that time, Johnny had fallen asleep, lulled by the steady rhythm of the rails. Liadan was almost to relax, when she heard a familiar voice in her head.

Why do you insist on this path, when we have told you it is not for you?

Liadan sighed, then took a moment to focus her thoughts. I will decide what is for me and my son. Why do you not accept that? She thought she saw movement behind the trees, a glimpse of man with hair like fire - the Lady's consort.

Foolish child. Were you not taught to respect your elders?

I was taught to respect myself.

That seemed to satisfy them, at least for now. A few minutes later, the train finally pulled away the trees and Liadan allowed herself to relax. She did not know if leaving the forest, leaving her home and everything she had ever known, was a good idea. But it was her idea and she had learned long ago to trust her instincts, even when no one else did. Doing so had brought her a husband and a son, through he most unlikely way.

She leaned over and pressed her lips against Johnny's head. "It's time for our next great adventure, my heart, and I am sure it is going to be an exciting one."
